What Is BlueStacks?

BlueStacks is an Android emulator for Mac and Windows that enables users to run almost any Android app on their desktop.

In essence, the software mimics the look and feel of an Android phone’s display.

Around 97% of the applications in Google’s Play Store can be run on BlueStacks‘ emulator.

If you want to play games on your desktop but don’t want to use a separate software, you may use this emulator. Even a mouse and keyboard may be used to play the games.

Multiple games may be played simultaneously, real-time translations are available, actions can be recorded and replayed, full HD support is available, and more.

It’s as easy as it gets to use BlueStacks. Install the desktop program, login in with your Google account, and then search for and download your desired games.

BlueStacks X, a browser-based version of its conventional desktop emulator, enabling users to play games in their browsers.

History of BlueStacks

Rosen Sharma, Jay Vaishnav, and Suman Saraf, the company’s CEO and co-founders, created BlueStacks in 2008 in San Francisco, California.

CEO Sharma obtained a Gold Medal from IIT Delhi and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cornell and Stanford Universities.

He founded his first startup, VxTreme, when he was a student at Stanford. He also sold GreenBorder and Teros to Google and Citrix, respectively, throughout the course of his career.

To further his career, he joined the virtualization division of software security business McAfee in 2010. His co-founders Vaishnav and Saraf, who both worked at the corporation in high positions, met him there.

While working at McAffee, the three started working on BlueStacks. When the initial BlueStacks demo was released in April 2011, it had been in development for almost two years.

As time passed, Android became into the dominant mobile operating system it is today. 630 million Windows devices would be sold worldwide in that year. A confluence of Windows’ ubiquity and Android’s rapid development made it an attractive target for acquisition.

As a result, BlueStacks raised its first round of funding in May 2011. Funding of $8.7 million was secured by the team, thanks in large part to their remarkable track record.

The BlueStacks App Player alpha was ultimately published on October 10th, 2011 by BlueStacks. A new round of investment was secured for BlueStacks ten days later. Investors including AMD, Citrix Systems, and Andreessen Horowitz, as well as some of the startup’s previous backers, invested an additional $6.4 million into the company.

In the middle of December, the App Player had been downloaded by more than 500,000 users. For Android users in March of 2012, BlueStacks introduced a beta version of the App Player, which gave them access to all of the Google Play Store’s more than 450,000 applications. BlueStacks had a limited selection of applications prior to this. There were more than one million downloads of the App Player during this period.

In June, three months later, the App Player for Mac was released. Set up a big wedding tent to commemorate the marriage between Apple and Android at Google’s I/O Developer Conference.

For example, BlueStacks announced a cooperation with AMD (the primary investor in its Series B) to enhance BlueStacks for AMD GPUs and APUs throughout the year. This deal enables AMD to greatly extend its reach by becoming the most important participant in the Windows 8 software distribution market..

With 5 million downloads and access to 750,000+ Android applications, BlueStacks ended 2012 on a high note. BlueStacks has already surpassed 10 million downloads five months after securing distribution arrangements with Lenovo, Asus, and Microsoft’s Surface Pro.

GamePop, an Android-based gaming system, was announced by the firm in May of that year and was expected to be available by the end of the year. The system would go up against the wildly popular OUYA, which had recently garnered $15 million in venture capital funding and was one of the most well-received Kickstarter projects ever.

Approximately 500 games would be available on the system. Glu Mobile and Halfbrick, two well-known mobile game developers, have joined with BlueStacks to create console-specific titles.

Even though the news was made many weeks ago, a startup called Looking Glass claimed that iOS-exclusive applications will be featured in BlueStacks. It also revealed a tiny version of the console at the same time.

In the end, BlueStacks launched the console in March of that year. There was a tepid response at best. However, despite the firm’s best efforts (BlueStacks hired powerhouses like Ubisoft and Warner Bros. Interactive as game development partners), the system soon faded into irrelevance and was canceled without any significant press announcement.

In spite of the setback, BlueStacks was still able to raise more money. Samsung’s venture arm invested $14 million in the business in July 2014. As a result, BlueStacks shifted its attention to the development of its app emulation platform.

BlueStacks 2 was introduced in December 2015, allowing users to run numerous Android applications at once, among other features. It also passed the 100 million download mark, which was a significant achievement (while counting 8 million unique users per month).

Some new connections with Twitch and Facebook Live were added to BlueStacks throughout the course of the year. The firm had completely turned its attention to becoming a game emulator at that time.

Releases of the emulator will continue to be made in the future, including version 3 in July 2017 and version 4 in September 2018. All following iterations brought significant performance gains.

With a 300 million download count by the end of 2018, the firm was a household name. In June of this year, BlueStacks released the Inside SDK, allowing third-party retailers like Steam to sell Android games directly from their websites.

Another round of investment was given to the company because of its steady expansion over the years. With the help of BlueStacks, Intel has created an optimized emulator for its processors.

BlueStacks’ executive team has created sister firms to aid in the company’s development. Game.tv, a community for mobile e-sports events, was created in 2019 as an example of their work.

The firm had a very profitable year in 2020. Billion-person lockdowns due to the coronavirus outbreak resulted in a flood of new players who tried out BlueStacks.

BlueStacks reached the landmark of one billion downloads 10 years after its inception, at the start of the year 2021. It released a new version of its emulator to mark the occasion. A browser-based emulation platform called BlueStacks X was also released in October.

Despite the fact that BlueStacks continues to develop at a rapid pace, it is also set to confront major competition. Windows stated in the summer of 2021 that Android applications would be able to operate natively on Windows 11, which is expected to be released in 2022.

BlueStacks now employs over 500 individuals in offices in countries including India, Japan, the United States, and many more.

How Does BlueStacks Make Money?

Through referral fees and video advertising, BlueStacks generates revenue.

Each of these income sources will be examined in further detail in the next section.

Advertising

BlueStacks derives much of its money by marketing other games on its platform.

These games (and the people behind them) get a lot of exposure across the board. Banner advertising and promotion symbols are used to promote products and services.

Even though it hasn’t been confirmed, it’s safe to believe that BlueStacks gets paid if a user downloads the sponsored game.

A platform with more than a billion downloads is a boon to game makers. BlueStacks is similar to Steam in that it may substantially speed up the adoption of a game that is eventually worth purchasing.

In addition, all further transactions may be carried out inside BlueStacks due to it being fully linked into the Google Play Store. Just like on smartphones, a free-to-play game such as PUBG may make money by selling additional items. S

Fees for Referrals

BlueStacks also makes money through Google’s referral fees, which it receives anytime a user makes a purchase in Google’s Play Store.

Despite the fact that most Android applications are free to use, there are a few that need a cost to be paid in order to install. When a purchased app is downloaded using the BlueStacks emulator, a commission is paid to BlueStacks.

In addition, Google Play Pass provides limitless access to games. Again, BlueStacks will take a cut of the subscription charge if a user purchases it via the app store.

Commercials in Motion

Finally, BlueStacks makes a very modest amount of money from video adverts that appear on its YouTube channel.

More than 100,000 individuals have subscribed to BlueStacks’ YouTube channel, which has been viewed more than 20 million times.

While 55% of the ad money goes to BlueStacks, the remaining 45% goes to YouTube, which administers the adverts.

Funding, Revenue, and Valuation of BlueStacks
In four rounds of venture capital investment, BlueStacks has received a total of $48.8 million.

There are a number of high-profile investors, including Andreessen Horowitz and Intel.

As a privately held business, BlueStacks is unable to provide any financial information to the general public at this time.
